All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Rule of Law Secretariat
Grant: £50,128
July 6, 2016
This grant will fund the secretariat of The APPG on the Rule of Law which is a cross‐party group that aims to promote parliamentary and public discussion of the rule of law as a practical concept.
The key outputs of this project will be 4-5 dedicated meetings per year supported by the secretariat at which members hear from expert speakers and discuss rule of law questions concerning topical issues. When appropriate, the APPG on the Rule of Law will also partner with other APPGs to host joint meetings. The Centre will produce pre-meeting briefings, post-meeting reports, and regular APPG bulletins containing rule of law news and material for current awareness issues. Furthermore, the Centre will continue building relationships and networks amongst law-related APPGs in order to strengthen the rule of law culture in Parliament.

Exploring Legal Capability: Proposal for Further Development and Analysis
Grant: £15,000
June 22, 2016
This is for additional analysis of data being collected as part of the ongoing TLEF funded 'Development of Standardised Inventories of Legal Capability' project. That project involves the conduct of two national probability surveys, data from which is being used to develop standardised measures of legal confidence and (separately) attitude to law, production of guidance for using the measures and production of ‘baseline’ legal confidence and attitude estimates.
This new ‘extension’ proposal looks to harness additional opportunities presented by the second survey of the current project. Specifically, it is proposed that the hitherto separately conceived legal confidence and attitudes to law data captured by the second survey be brought together, along with a small amount of additional data relating to legal capability (to be added at the conclusion of the second survey design phase), to form the basis of a much broader based statistical analysis of drivers of, and links between, legal confidence, attitudes to law, wider legal capability, and broader demographic factors (similar in form to that set out in the “How People Understand and Interact with the Law” report (published on TLEF's website).

RightsInfo - Bill of Rights Proposal
Grant: £10,890
December 31, 2015
The government’s consultation on replacing the Human Rights Act with a British Bill of Rights (‘BoR’) is due to begin shortly. The consultation is expected to last 12 weeks. It is not clear yet what the proposals will be but they could significantly reduce the level of rights protection in the UK. The coming debate therefore poses a huge public educational challenge. Government consultations rarely succeed in engaging the public whose interests will be most affected.
We want to change that and produce an easy to navigate, engaging and fun online resource with around ten sections which explain the key proposals. It is not intended to tell people what to think, or take a political line, but rather to explain the potential pros and cons and encourage them to contribute to the consultation.

Future Advice - South West Law Centres Community Interest Company – Ethical Law
Grant: £71,454
July 16, 2015
The project plans to generate a sustainable source of income for the 3 law centres by earning private fees which are split between the solicitor and Ethical Law (“EL”). EL’s profits are then donated to the law centres.
EL will draw on a pool of solicitors initially specialising in family, employment and immigration, as we know from experience that there is demand for private work in these areas.
