Birmingham Community Law Centre opened in October 2013 and in its first two years has helped over 1800 people. We provide legal advice on benefits, debt, community care, immigration and public law from our offices in Sparkbrook. We are part of Central England Law Centre which has offices in both Coventry and Birmingham.

Coventry Law Centre was set up in 1976 to provide free legal advice and representation to people facing disadvantage in Coventry. The Law Centre has changed significantly over the years since then to ensure that it remains best able to meet the needs of clients. It has previously been known as the Benefits Shop and CLIRS, but has been called Coventry Law Centre since the mid 1990s.

RIPPLE roll out – Phase 1

RIPPLE (2016/18) pioneered a new approach to public legal education, rooted in and informed by casework practice. It showed the power of connecting knowledge transfer to experience and created opportunities for identification of systemic issues with potential wider benefit.
RIPPLE focused on the law relating to health and social care, working with groups of people in similar situations.
This project will extend the RIPPLE approach across all of its health and community care work and begin to explore what can be achieved within communities with a legal practice working in this way. This project is Phase 1 - essential groundwork to support the proposed roll out.

Kids in Need of Defence - IT strategy

This project is to enable KIND UK to partner with commercial law firms to support pro-bono capacity for legal advice and representation to enable children/young people with irregular immigration status to regularise their status and enjoy the rights of settled residency.
Strategic aims
- Build a pro bono network with the capacity and scale to address the needs of approximately 120,000 migrant children living in the UK with irregular immigration status
- Identify and litigate important issues related to children’s rights
- Promote public understanding of the needs of the children and young people we support
- Use project data and experiences to communicate about the needs and experiences of children; actively seeking to influence systems blocking children from resolving immigration problems.
