Located within the UCL Faculty of Laws, the Centre for Access combines innovative teaching methods and research based learning with the provision of pro bono legal advice to vulnerable communities, predominately in the areas of social welfare, employment and education law.
UCL is unique in its incorporation of casework and social justice awareness into the law degree programmes we offer. Working in partnership with charity organisations and legal professionals, the Centre provides legal assistance to members of the local community while giving students an opportunity to gain hands on experience in meeting legal needs.

"The Future of Justice" Joint Conference 14th/15th May 2018

An international conference on ‘The Future of Justice’ held at UCL on 14-15 May 2018 a joint initiative of UCL, the Nuffield Foundation and the Legal Education Foundation. The focus of the conference was the impact of technological revolution in justice systems and the power of empirical research to understand change. A central aim of the conference was to develop a new agenda for empirical research into the justice system and begin to build the political will and resource necessary to deliver it.

The Value of Health-Justice Partnerships

There are three elements to this project:
- Continuation for a further year of TLEF support for the health researcher at the Guttmann Health-Justice Partnership pilot project. Data collection on the association between legal advice and wellbeing is underway and results may be lost without more time to complete the study. The research addresses significant gaps in the evidence: results will provide data on health outcomes for clients receiving legal advice in primary care, as well as outcomes for the GP practice. Lessons from implementation will feed into new guidance to support the establishment of similar integrated health and legal services;
- funding for a workshop in Winter 2017 to engage health-policy decision-makers in the potential of early legal advice in reducing health inequalities and contributing to better health and well-being among vulnerable groups. Sir Malcolm Grant (Chairman NHS England) has agreed to Chair the workshop and engagement is already in train with key policy makers;
- a feasibility study of the potential for a UK national centre for Health-Justice Partnerships that might assist in removing some of the existing barriers to the establishment of partnerships, promote best practice in service delivery and rigorous evaluation research to support policy development.

Guttmann Health - Justice Partnership Project

The project is a Health-Justice partnership between UCL Centre for Access to Justice and the Guttmann Health and Well-Being Centre in Stratford. It provides on-site free legal advice by supervised law students to patients through GP social prescription referrals or as drop-in clients. The project’s vision is to make a positive impact on the resolution of legal problems, the health and well-being of patients, health service use, future advice-seeking behaviour and legal education. The project could be scaled-up, providing a prototype for law schools and advice agencies around the UK.
Building on UCL’s access to justice research expertise, and facilitated by the partnership with clinicians, rigorous evaluation of the impact of the service is fundamental to the project. Robust impact evidence will be valuable to commissioners of integrated primary care services aimed at reducing health inequalities and improving community health and well-being. UCL Laws has made a significant long-term investment in employing qualified lawyers and an empirical legal researcher to launch this project.
